ORGANized
Sunday, February 12, 2012, 8 pm
Music Gallery
197 John Street

Mechanical/human, past/present – this is a concert that breaches boundaries. Works pit Continuum’s ensemble against mechanical devices ranging from simple crank organs to fully souped up Dutch-style street organs. Other works include a commission from Brian Current, and Ligeti’s Continuum arranged for two marimbas. Also part of the event is a talk by Henk de Graauw, engineer, inventor and whisperer of street organs.

PERFORMERS
Continuum’s ensemble with Haruka Fujii (percussion) and Richard Marsella (barrel organ)

Contes pour enfants pas sages
8 cautionary entertainments
Sunday, May 27 & Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 8pm
918 Bathurst

More wisdom and bewilderness from the animal kingdom:  a multi-layered, multi-media setting of all eight fables of French poet Jacques Prévert by Canadian composer Christopher Butterfield, a master at once of poignant gesture and musical slapstick. The zaniness of Prevert’s fables, coupled with Butterfield’s ear for the absurd and the spectacular forces required for this production, make this one of the premiere events of Toronto’s musical season.

PERFORMERS
Christopher Butterfield, composer
Anne Grimm, soprano
Benjamin Butterfield, tenor

Continuum Contemporary Music

Formed in 1985, Continuum Contemporary Music presents concerts featuring the core ensemble of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion, as well as unusual instrumental combinations. The organization has been responsible for commissioning and premiering close to 150 new works from emerging Canadian and international composers in the first stages of significant careers and also established composers charting new territory. Early on voice was a focus; it was for championing new work in this area and commissioning extensively for soprano Barbara Hannigan that Continuum won the 1994 Jean A. Chalmers Award. Increasingly the group engages in collaborative and interdisciplinary work.
